Fringed brome occurs in various wet to mesic habitats---moist woods, fens, wet meadows, lakeshores, streambanks, oak woods or savannas. It doesn't form conspicuous patches. Instead, clusters of just a few stems arise scattered among other species. It is slender and has dangling spikelets in the inflorescence.
